Wood Adhesive
Product Description
Soy protein hydrolyzate, EKA
3050 sold by Eka Chemicals, Inc. is currently being used for
manufacturing finger-jointed dimensional lumber. Finger-jointed
lumber is made by end-gluing short pieces of wood, which would
otherwise be chipped, burned for fuel or discarded. A major
lumber grading agency, Western Wood Products Association has
approved the soy adhesive for vertical use studs and structural
lumber of all grades. It has certified one mill, to date, to
use the process to make finger-jointed dimensional lumber.
Benefits
The lower cost soy reduces the amount of phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) required in the gluing process and eliminates the need for external energy for curing. The soy adhesive may be used with either dried or green wood. Use with green wood has additional economic and environmental benefits. By eliminating knots and other weak areas of wood prior to kiln-drying, kiln costs are reduced along with a reduction in Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions per unit of finished lumber.

Plywood Adhesive Additives and Extenders
Product Description
Soy/wheat gluten adhesive extenders, and additives for plywood, such as Soy-Ply(r), Sepro-X(r), Glu-X MMS(r) and Soy-Fill(r) from the
Robertson Corporation, replace a portion of the petroleum-based resins used to adhere plywood layers together. These relatively low-cost extenders improve process performance of traditional adhesives used in plywood making while reducing production costs.
Benefits
The soy component reduces total formaldehyde levels compared to conventional adhesives and data indicates that soy may act as a scavenger for formaldehyde in the finished product, thus reducing or retarding the off-gassing of a material widely associated with the sick building syndrome. The process reduces wastewater streams from plywood plants and, when properly applied, reduces processing errors which result in unusable products destined to landfills.

Decorative Composites
Product description
Composite materials made of post-consumer newsprint and soy resins are being produced for use as decorative building composites. With the appearance of stone and the working characteristics and cost of hard woods these composites are usable as flooring, paneling, tabletops and a variety of other uses.
Benefits
A value-added use of a recycled product (wastepaper) and a renewable resource (soybeans), these composite materials reduce reliance on petroleum used in adhesives for traditional composites and flooring materials, conserve wood and reduce waste production.

Oil Spill Clean-up
Product description
The CytoSol Process, based on formulated biosolvent (methyl soyate) allows the removal and recovery of spilled crude oil and other petroleum products from both coastal and inland spill sites. The product has been listed by the EPA on the National Contingency Plan for oil spill cleanups. The EPA points out that the listing of "CytoSol Biosolvent" on the NCP Product Schedule does not constitute approval, certification, authorization, licensing, or promotion of the product; nor does it imply compliance with any criteria or minimum standards for such agents. Also, it is the only shoreline clean-up material licensed by the state of California.
Benefits
The process uses virtually non-toxic, non-volatile and biodegradable vegetable oil solvents to dissolve and extract crude oil which can then be washed from contaminated soil with cold water and recovered for use as a bunker fuel. Natural bacteria are stimulated to grow by the treatment which biodegrades the remaining residues.

Concrete Form Release, Concrete Curing Agents, Sealers and Stains
Product description
A variety of formulated products based on soybean oil and/or esterified soy oil are being used to replace diesel fuel and other volatile petroleum distillates used to lubricate concrete forms, to coat concrete and highways during curing, and to seal and/or stain concrete.
Benefits
The diesel fuel or other petroleum distillates used for these purposes volatilize into the atmosphere increasing smog and causing ozone depletion. They wash off of concrete surfaces with rainfall and pollute surface waters. Use of biodegradable, non-toxic soy oil products as replacements provides significant human health and environmental benefits.

Herbicide Adjuvants
Product Description
Over one hundred branded adjuvant products are being sold in the agricultural market to enhance the activity of herbicides. Many contain soy methyl esters as a replacement for environmentally harmful petroleum-based components.
Benefits
By enhancing herbicide activity adjuvants reduce application volumes, and thereby reduce total pesticide load on the environment. Adjuvants based on soybean oils and methylated soy oils perform as well, or better than, petroleum-based adjuvants, are biodegradable, non-volatile, low in toxicity and safer for workers to handle. They reduce the load of petroleum products entering the atmosphere and surface water.

Diesel Lubricity Additives
Product Description
Modified soybean oil has been tested and is being sold as an additive to improve the lubricity of both #1 and #2 diesel fuel. At least three companies are selling methyl soyate-based formulations and one company has announced intent to sell a newly developed soy telomer. These products significantly improve the lubricating effect of diesel fuel when added at low rates (1% or less by weight). At least one significant petroleum refiner, Farmland Industries, has begun distribution of a methyl soyate enhanced "premium diesel." This product is sold with enhanced guarantees of engine performance and reduced maintenance. Other methyl soyate lubricity enhancers are sold as after market products to be added by diesel users themselves.
Benefits
The federally mandated removal of sulfur from motor fuels significantly decreased the inherent lubricity of commercially available diesel fuels, often well below engine manufacturers specifications. Poor lubricity contributes to higher maintenance and reduced fuel mileage. Fuel refiners have attempted to improve diesel lubricity through the use of a variety of additives. Soy-based lubricity additives are made from a renewable raw material, are very low in toxicity, are non-volatile, have a high flash point for safety against accidental fires and are biodegradable.

General Cleaners, Adhesives Removal
Products
Bean-e-Clean
Ickee Stickee Unstuck
Product Description
Much like the soy-based solvents used to clean parts, metals, and ink and graphic inks, these products use methylated soybean oil. However, they are for use in milder applications such as hand cleaning and glue and adhesives removal.
Benefits
By using biodegradable soybean oil, these products are not only safe for the user and applicator, but for the environment as well. The renewable resource that provides the basis for these chemicals, soybeans, is readily available, and may be less expensive than traditional cleaners. Their low volatility and ease of disposal are additional benefits.

Paint Removal Solvents
Product Description
Soy-Gel, a lead-based paint/graffiti remover, has been developed as a gel-like solvent that softens paint in a few minutes, allowing it to be easily removed and disposed. This product allows companies like General Motors, Boeing, and even armed forces sectors to remove lead-based paint, or prepare surfaces for new paint application. Graffiti removal is possible because the gel-formulation works on irregular surfaces.
Benefits
Using biodegradable methylated soybean oil, this product is biodegradable, has no odor, and is nonhazardous to skin, although gloves are recommended for sensitive users. The product's gel formulation allows application with a brush, and will soften paint within a few minutes. Also, unlike regular liquid solvents, graffiti removal from irregular surfaces is easier, because the gel formulation will not run or drip.
