SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Congressman John Shimkus was named the Illinois Soybean Association's (ISA) 1998 Friend of Agriculture. Shimkus was presented with the award during the 1998 Illinois Commodity Conference in Springfield, Ill.
"Shimkus' work on behalf of soybean farmers to pass the first major biodiesel package was a major victory for all in the soybean industry," said Dwain Ford, ISA president.
Shimkus represents the 20th Congressional District, which includes Springfield, Mt. Vernon, Quincy and the East St. Louis metro area. While he has only served as congressman for two years, he has helped pass the biodiesel amendment to the EPACT bill and has also served as a member of the Telecommunications, Trade and Consumer Protection subcommittees.
"Very few rookie congressman can accomplish the feats Shimkus has in his first two years of office," said Ford.
Shimkus has also been recognized by other Associations for his service to the agricultural industry. This year he received the Friend of Farm Bureau award and the 20th Congressional District ACTIVATOR Friend of Agriculture Award. He is actively involved in his local Kiwanis, American Legion and the Senior Companion Program. Shimkus and his wife, Karen, live with their two sons in Collinsville, Ill.
